Ohio man beaten, raped after peering into child's bedroom
AUGUST 18--An apparent peeping Tom was sexually assaulted with a tree branch after being discovered peering into the bedroom window of a five-year-old Ohio girl.

Yeah, well... I can't say it's right, but I also don't blame the little girls loved ones (especially her Mother) at ALL. I don't even want to think about what kind of awful things I'd be capable of if someone messed with Enid. Unfortunately, when people take the law into their own hands, it further opens the door for massively unjust vigilatism (sp?), and if it became acceptable, people could easily beat the crap out of someone and simply claim they were doing something naughty. *sigh* Regardless, when it comes down to it, I would go to jail in a hartbeat to make sure someone who hurt my child suffered greatly. It's the natural way of things, after all. We all know how nasty Mom critters can get.

As a parent, I can understand beating the guy to a pulp. It's natural to be protective of your children... but in this case things got way out of hand.

On the flip side of this... a related item just arrived in my email:

About five years ago something similar happened in Kent, WA. A guy was accused of raping a teenage girl who lived in his same apartment complex. He was awaiting trial and out on bail or something like that, but anyway he wasn't locked up.

A group of local vigilantes grabbed him, shaved his body, wrote "pervert", "molester" etc all over his body, kicked him in the nuts so many times that it smashed one of his balls into oatmeal, then they taped him up an dumped him naked into a restaurant parking lot.

Well that's not so bad except that it ended up that he didn't do it. The girl lied about being raped to get attention from her boyfriend who was breaking up with her.

I'm not sure whatever happened to that guy except I am pretty sure he's still pissed off about it.

That is my problem with the death penalty. Someone like the Spokane Serial Killer, Robert Yates for example, needs to be gone and quick.

Butt .. if a society kills people for killing people and then itself kills the wrong person, is it not guilty of murder itself?

DNA testing has already proved to me that we have executed innocent men.

I can't support the vigilante justice, even if the guy was guilty...down that path lies anarchy.

Raping him with a tree branch was that one step too far. At least the guy will have the company of his assaulters in prison. Don't take this wrong, but the people that did THIS crime are no better than the peeper, and in my eyes much worse.

Simple question: What if the guy they beat up was retarded? I've known a couple of kids in my lifetime who weren't above dropping trou, and whippin' it, whippin' it good. They were retarded and didn't know any better.

We understand their passion, but our empathy doesn't validate it or make it any more rational. We know you love your kids, you needn't demonstrate it by beating a man to death... for an HOUR. It happening over the course of an hour completely nullifies the crime of passion thing.
