I'm bored

Post by Rocketdork » Sun Aug 15, 2004 6:52 am

Here I sit at 6:30 am on a Sunday morning...I've been awake for 2 1/2 hours now...

I arrived home last night at 7:00 from the Netherlands. I actually was able to get some sleep on the flight and managed to drink enough water to stay hydrated. That is always a problem for me. I usually get home with a roaring headache and an achy body from these trips. 17 hours for this one...I really enjoy being in a foreign country but the plane rides are just too damn long.

Those of you that have traveled outside of the US, do you have severe culture shock when you return? I look around at my fellow Americans and am generally embarassed, my embarassment ususally turns to anger. Why can't we be more open minded. Its funny, I can usually spot the americans in the crowd. Amsterdam is the worst. The Dutch must think everybody in America is a stoned college student. They walk around with their American attitude and dreadlocks trying to show how much they fit into the European lifestyle, they miss the point by miles.

Ah, well, I am tired and grumpy.

I can relate, but for different reasons. I don't think it's an issue of open mindedness, but that depends on what you are being open minded about - the term by itself is really rather vague.

When I was in South Africa and Guatemala (moreso there), my culture shock came in the form of watching people in third-world conditions have a more or less decent life, in spite of what we see as hardships, while we with our riches, diversions and toys (an' I wub my toys!) are really among the sorriest lot on the whole planet:

Case in point.
Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened.

I have lived both in the east (as in Southeast Asia) and the west (as in England). IMHO, it is not the nationality of the people, it is more their personality that makes em fun or fucked!

I have met asshole Brits and asshole Asians. I have enjoyed the company of very loving people from both places as well.

It seems that often what we look for, we find! I never paid any attention to VW bugs till I bought one in 1972 and then they seemed to be everywhere!
