Is the NAR like the NRA, but for the the mellow, geekish types?
Geekish YES, Mellow, not at all. Some of the guys are pretty radical in their views...but I guess you'd have to be a part of the community to really understand.

I thought it was a pretty cool paint job. In a rush to complete before a scheduled club launch, we just wanted to cover the rocket so it had some type of finish on it, so we put some primer on the airframe...but that looked bad too. So we grabbed one can of every color of krylon the guy on the right had in his basement...and shot all the colors in a random pattern on the rocket. The name of the rocket ended up being Joseph (as in Joseph and the coat of many colors). About 2 1/2 minutes after this photo was taken, the rocket flew to 3500 ft, the parachute didn't deploy and the rocket came down in a hurry. It impacted the ground at about 260 mph, and burried itself in the ground about 30 inches. Video is here.mmeowgrl wrote:hehehehe I thought the rocket was photoshopped in, then I saw the original pic!
Currently rebuilding it, the new name is Lazurus.

Pet peeve here, its not a missile. Missiles have active guidence and are shot at a target with the intent to destroy...Rockets are not actively guided (passive guidance with the fins) and the only thing you are shooting at it the sky, most of the time you hit it.baldy wrote:you can even build your own missiles WOW

If you have about an hour, I'll tell you about all the NEW regulations for rocketry that have been implemented as a result of Sept. 11 and the patriot act (which by the way, if its successful there won't be any patriots left to defend.)

Aren't there un-guided missles called "dumbfire" missles? I seem to remember that from WWII or something? Also I know that any projectile (beit bullet, stone, or arrow) is also called a 'missile'. Now the term missle might mean something more specific in the world of rocketry (you being the resident expert I'll bow to your experience) but by definition even a rocket can be considered a missle. I do not believe that the intent to destroy is the only thing that classifies something as a missle.
Mirriam-Webster defines it as:
Mirriam-Webster defines it as:
Main Entry: 1mis·sile
Pronunciation: 'mi-s&l, chiefly British -"sIl
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin missilis, from mittere to throw, send
Date: 1611
1 : capable of being thrown or projected to strike a distant object
2 : adapted for throwing or hurling missiles

Dang it, I stand corrected, a rocket can be considered a missile.
I guess its just the image that the word missile evokes...most people see something shooting off airplane that ends up in a fireball. You know the popular media image...top gun.
When you say missile people think weapon, when you say rocket people think Astronaut.
The hobby that I have is under some serious "attacks" by our "fine" government, and anything that paints the hobby as a bunch of fringe group extremests gives me heartburn....even if we are.
