Thanks!
For my birthday, Rachael took me to participate in the
March of 1000 Flaming Skeletons, which is a now a seemingly annual part of Oklahoma City's Ghouls Gone Wild parade. The Flaming Skeleton March is put on by the Flaming Lips, who sell the costumes on their website, and if you get one, you get to participate in their part of the show. The suits come with t-shirts and its pretty fun to be a part of.
As mentioned, Rachael purchased our suits, but we ended up doing something a little different for the parade. Behind the skeletons, more of the traditional Flaming Lips stuff follows. They usually bring a group of fans onstage with them at their shows, but in some sort of costume. Over the years they've had animals suits, aliens, santas, and most recently, Teletubbies. We were elevated to the rank of Teletubbies prior to our suiting up.
We picked out our particular colors of Tubbies. I elected for purple because - you know - its the allegedly gay one according to most leading televangelists. Rachael chose green because she's all eco-friendly and whatnot. We were standing around with our pelts, prepared to spread 'Tubby joy to Flaming Lips fans all along the parade route. Suddenly, I was promoted again....
I was asked if I could handle an inflatable. Having been to many shows, I knew instantly what they were talking about: I was being asked if I could handle walking the parade route in a giant, inflatable costume. I immediately said yes, though to be honest I really had no idea whether or not it was something I could handle.
I was given more or less first pick of the costumes. I chose the astronaut for reasons that would be obvious to anyone who knows me. Other choices included a catfish, a couple different suns, a butterfly, and a frog. I also chose the astronaut because it was one I had seen on stage and knew how cool it was. See below for a couple like the one I wore in action. I can't say with certainty that the one I wore was one of these exactly, because I've seen four of them onstage at once, but the odds are good, and these were just like it, anyway.
As I was set into my suit, I was strapped into the foot holders and a "jet pack" (portable air compressor) was strapped on my back. After an interminable wait for our part of the parade to begin, we were off...
I'll post more about the adventure when photos and video have made it online......

To be Continued!
