haven't actually touched the stuff since shortly after high school, but never really understood the reasoning behind it being illegal.

Going to fly to Amsterdam on Saturday...so maybe I'll stop by a "coffee house" just to see if the stories are true.

Of course, the federal government will now take this opportunity to fly people caught with pot in their homes out of Alaska and prosecute them in other states (without letting the jury know it's legal in the state where the offence took place).

It's happened in California.

Granted, the guy who was arrested in California and flown to Washington DC was growing.... but he was doing so to at the request of the city to provide to medical patients.

There's info here (now won't that look funny when IT goes over their access logs)

That just really pisses me off. I find the reasons for it being illegal laughable in the first place, and I definitely agree that it has wonderful abilities to sooth the aches and pains of the sick. The "gateway drug" theory always made me angry too. I firmly believe that anyone who would be willing to expose themselves to designer drugs would be willing to do so anyway, with or without marijuana. I think there are legitimate reasons for personal concern if you're smoking A LOT (like all day long? lol), because it can kill your sex drive and cause exisiting emotional issues to get worse, but the risks of smoking pot are certainly less than smoking cigarettes or drinking heavily, and those things are legal. Alcohol in controlled amounts is good for you, and I think a little pot here 'n' there is, too.

(For the record, I'm an "occasional" participant. :roll: )

<soap box>

Personally... I think they should just legalize it and sell it in the liquor store with an age limit of 21 on it. I've been given the argument that doing so would make it too easy for minors to acquire.

HELLO!!!!!!! ANYONE HOME???!!!

It's all to easy to acquire now. If a minor chose to partake, at least they'd be getting something that wasn't laced with pcp or sprayed with Raid just to make a crappy bag seem better.

Think of the tax revenue that could be created by it! Now factor in all the money that's not being spent on arresting, prosecuting, and incarcerating people for having it.

Of course, I’ve been given the argument that if it was legal, the government wouldn’t make any money on taxes because people would just grow their own. Why would you grow it when you could just buy it? When is the last time you met someone who smokes cigarettes and grows their own tobacco? In my life, I’ve not met one.

There’s also the opinion that if it’s legitimized by legalization, the numbers of people who smoke it will skyrocket. I’m not sure that it will. Yes, the reported number of users will go up, but I think the majority of them will be people who smoked it before and just didn’t tell anyone. What is important to realize is that just as most people who drink alcohol are not alcoholics, most people who smoke marijuana are not stoners. Consider as well the fact that in the Netherlands, the country with the most liberal marijuana laws in the world, only 28% of teenagers smoke marijuana, compared to 41% of American teens.

There’s also the though that smoking pot will make your life a waste. While there are people out there who smoke pot and do pretty much nothing else, I don’t think it’s the marijuana that causes them to have so little drive in their life. They would be like that anyway (I know plenty of people who don’t smoke it and are a complete waste of skin). I personally know a lot of professionals who also partake in a little doobage from time to time. This doesn’t make them any less productive in the workplace.

After 20 years of study, the California Attorney General's panel concluded in 1989 that "an objective consideration shows that marijuana is responsible for less damage to the individual and society than alcohol and cigarettes." While it’s true that marijuana has a lot more tar in it than tobacco does, people don’t smoke it the same way (unless you’re my mother… but that’s another story).

And... for the record.. I don't smoke it. I've tried it, but it makes me giggle at everything I see, eat everything I see, then fall asleep about 20 minutes later. Not my gig (though I’ve been told I’m quite entertaining to watch).

I've had times where it was like that, but I guess being a seasoned smoker gives me a different reaction. Now I just mellow the hell out, and I don't get the munchies so much anymore. I don't get sleepy right away either, but when I do go to bed that night, I sleep like a rock. And most times I feel pretty refreshed the next morning. Alcohol, however, will make me sleepy after about two drinks, and it makes me feel sluggish and stupid. The only bad thing I've found is by the time an 1/8 is gone (after a week or so, usually) my body is fairly sore, which is weird. I also noticed that, just like alcohol, I want to smoke cigarettes more after indulging. So I cut back from being a regular user to only getting some about once every other month or so.

Just for the record, I AM Bio's mother and despite what he had to say about me, I am very proud of him for speaking out on a subject near and dear to my heart. I have been a medical user of cannabis for thirty years, since long before the current attempts to legalize it. I fully credit it for saving my life. I am presently living in a state where it is legal for medical use and I display my certification proudly. Meanwhile, I am an active professional with forty years of a sucessful career behind me and only a few more until retirement, when my husband (who is also a cannabis patient) and I plan to devote our efforts to cultivating a fine garden of nature's most astounding herb. Keep spreading the word and someday we will all have the freedom to choose our own medication without fear of criminalization. BJ 8)
