I too am still using winAmp... v2.93 to be exact. It does everything I want it to (which is... um... play music). Plus... I still use the AcidSpunk and Gies visualization plugins (for the OMG... I SHOULD SMOKE POT AND STARE AT MY SCREEN ALL DAMN NIGHT LONG effect).

I have windows media player 10, but I only use it for ripping CD's (it's damn fast and, after tweaking the settings, makes 192kbps non-protected mp3's... so I'm happy). It's a tool, made by tools.

Be warned, converting can lead to very poor sound quality issues. Never take a compressed file and re-compress it.

I use Ogg to rip from CD's. I use CDex to rip my music on my windows box and the transfer it all to the Linux juke box (my laptop is way faster then the 700mhz linux aka Bio's ex trashbox). It works great and fast with no frills like visuals. I keep some of the music on my laptop for my Samsung mp3 player (does Ogg) and have plug-ins for the laptops player. Sound quality is excellent with the Ogg and it is open source. The only down side is that Apple refuses to support Ogg on it's Ipods.

At least ftp took a small amount of skill (searching nfo files for good sites, for instance), but the p2p genre sure streamlined it. That genre I haven't gotten in to, fairuse I have, because of before stated issues with the recording industry.
Yeah, that was what I came up on as well, and I was a little late to the Napster party at that. Now, I have a small p2p app that I'm happy with (when you download music that is released in limited editions by the artists themselves, the RIAA doesn't much care).

I marvel at the fact that not only did I use FTP for downloading, I did it at work, not only with the full knowledge of my employers, but with a dedicated server for exchange among my peers and I. If you were to even mention the idea of P2P in most workplaces these days, admins would appear at your cube and forcefully insert a dusty spool of Cat-5... sideways.

But I miss those days to be honest. When I downloaded an entire song, I was proud. It wasn't easy and I remember you didn't find what you were looking for, you looked through a friendly FTP folder and were appreciative for what you found.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are so old that MP3 trading now has its own air of nostalgia.

Hehed... oh yes.

Encap and I would scour the web for ftp sites. When we hit a big one, I would start at the bottom of the list, encap could start at the top. We didn't care if we knew or liked the music, we'd rape it for all it was worth and share it out.

For a long time, my machine was the unofficial jukebox for that damn company.

As always, we never quite appreciate the old SSI days for what they were. I still miss the fun interludes between calls.
