W32.Blaster.Worm is a bitch!

Post by bio » Tue Aug 12, 2003 11:57 pm

Tonight when I came in, the whole place is in chaos.

Apparently, the W32.Blaster.Worm got into the building and they spent the day attempting to clean it off. Out IT department closed a few ports to contain it, which killed off a few of our servers (they require the same ports for communications to the skytel system).

ug

It's gonna be a long one!

Dude that patch was out a month ago. You should fire the whole IT staff and hire me.

Don't even get started on our "crack IT staff". The only thing crack about them is what their smoking. One of my buddies was having a problem with his system a few years back and one of the IT monkeys actually tried to tell him it was because of his Windows background.
Anyway, I went to them yesterday to get a CD with the fix on it (since my home computer got infected when I VPN'd in) and not only did they tell me that they didn't have the fix up and running yet, but that they wouldn't support my home PC since it wasn't company property. Even though I got managment approval to use it for work. So instead of arguing with them, I went home, got to Microsoft's site and installed the patch. What morons.

Which is why I'm working this stupid shift. If they could somehow keep network connectivity going using that magical SHNS ring they installed (at no small cost), this wouldn't be an issue.

I'm still trying to figure out why it's your job to determine if the network is up. Shouldn't one of those monkeys be sitting there all night surfing the web to make sure the network is up? What are you supposed to do if it's down?
