I need some advice
I have a girlfriend who I've known for a long time. She's a lot of fun, most of the time. But I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to keep hanging around with her. She's very self-absorbed, and is obsessed with her physical appearance. She's always wanting me to listen to whatever new drama there is in her life, which are almost always things she brings on herself. But there have been a few times now where I was feeling pretty bad about life and needed someone to talk to but couldn't reach her if my life had depended on it. She sometimes goes into "hermit" mode and disappears for a couple weeks, ignoring all phone calls and emails. She sometimes tells little white lies about her life to make herself seem more important and attractive than she is. I know this because I've caught her telling the same stories more than once with important details changing. I also know this because when you know someone for a long time, you naturally can call their bullshit. I've never called her on it. She also flakes out on me ALL THE TIME, saying "Yeah we'll hang out this weekend" but then telling me in casual conversation later that she's going out with another of her friends that night. Basically, I'm starting to think she might be something of a toxic friend, but she's also the only friend I have in town, besides JC and my family. I don't make friends easilly at all, so just dumping her would be very hard to do, unless I wanted to cripple my social life, which is pathetic as it is. If anyone has any advice, let me know. Sorry to dump this here, but I'm getting really sick of it and have no idea what I should do.

I think you have answered your own question. A friend is someone who is there for you as much as you are for them. Sometimes we think people are our friends, just because we have known them a long time. I would have a heart to heart talk with this person about how you are feeling about the friendship. If she is a real friend, you will know it by the end of the conversation.

If I may digress (and I usually do), I would have to say that that emoticon (ie:
) is my all-time favourite. It says so little, yet so much.
OK I'll move along now...

Locked in a room with you, 2 tigers and a gun with 2 bullets, I'd shoot you twice.
