Shootout in Spokane

Post by bugfreezer » Wed Apr 27, 2005 9:28 am

What is going on over there?

Spokane Valley has a full SWAT situation going on

KXLY had camera on the apparent sister of the suspect holed up. They kept the camera on her when rounds were exchanged between SWAT and the suspect. She freaked.

Bad taste!

Nothing on any of the news websites for Spokane, but that doesn't surprise me at all.

I got a call from the other half, she says the area around my place is pretty locked down. We only live around 6 blocks or so from the action. She has been listening on the police band scanner we have. Says its pretty exciting, but she's twisted that way.

From KXLY (subscription only)
Spokane deputies exchange gunfire with armed suspect

SPOKANE - Spokane County Sheriff’s deputies are currently in a shootout with a 29-year-old male armed with a rifle holed up in a house at East Sinto Avenue and North Mullan Road in Spokane Valley, Wash. Hails of gunfire could be could be heard throughout the morning and police were advising residents to avoid area, which police describe as volatile and "chaotic."

At least 75 officers and multiple jurisdictions, including Spokane County and Spokane SWAT teams, were at the scene and authorities have shut down at least a ten-block radius in the neighborhood, say police. Police believe the suspect has a high-powered rifle and may be wounded in the arm. They also believe another male is in the house, located at 1320 N Stout. Police did not know the relationship between the second person and the suspect, but they did not believe it was a hostage situation.

Police advised residents inside homes in the area to stay away from windows and move into interior rooms. They advised other residents on foot or in cars to avoid the area completely.

Parents with children who attend nearby Ness Elementary School were advised to keep them away from the area. Students were being re-directed to West City School. Twelve students already at Ness Elementary School were reportedly safe and hunkered down in the gymnasium with staff.

Police said they received a call from the suspect's ex-girlfriend Wednesday morning. The girlfriend said the suspect was distraught over their breakup and was threatening suicide and harming others. She said he had a .22 rifle and was in house at the 1300 block of N Stout.

Spokane Valley police officers arrived at the scene and surrounded the home. One officer managed to enter the home and talk with the suspect inside; however, while they were talking, someone began shooting at officers from a basement window and an exchange of gunfire ensued.

Police said the suspect reportedly later called 9-1-1 to tell officers he had been wounded in the arm during the shootout. It was unclear whether the suspect was still in communication with officers, but negotiators were trying to talk with the suspect.

No injuries were reported so far.

I live right around there too. (Broadway and Felts)

Daks hit the roadblocks head on, this morning on her way to work. She had to call in and tell her boss that the Swat teams were going to make her late.

When I woke up and saw the news, my neighbor hood looked like a counter-strike game gone awry.

I don't know the details, but I guess its over. The guy is dead. The don't know if he killed himself, or they killed him.

I don't know if they opened the roads or not.

It was a suicide.

He killed himself after a seven hour stand-off with the police.
Around 1:45 p.m., law enforcement officials sent a robotic camera into the house located at 1320 North Stout Avenue in the Spokane Valley. Spokane County Sheriff's deputies told KREM 2 News the camera captured the image of the suspect lying on the floor in a bedroom of a house.

At 1:55 p.m., Spokane County Sheriff Mark Sterk announced that the suspect was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

And more news from the lovely two mule, olive pit of a town we live in!

FBI agents raided the home of Airway Heights Mayor, Dale Perry, around 7:30 this morning. They took his computer, printer, and a bunch of paperwork from his home.

The Mayor claims he's innocent and is cooperating fully with investigators, but no one will say what it's about.

I just got home, the roads are open...but the safeway parking lot still looks like an army base...well, and army base with a BUNCH of news trucks in it.

They also had a stabbing at the Sullivan Scoreboard Taveren, and the SWAT team was out all night trying to locate a murder suspect. The stabbing happened a few blocks from our house.

Those poor kids at the school, not knowing how things are going to play out.
Scary stuff.
