Groups in Pakistan are refusing to allow their children to receive a polio vaccination, saying it's an American plot to sterilize Muslim children.
Polio has been all but wiped out in the world, with the exception of 4 countries: Pakistan, Nigeria, India and Afghanistan.
*sigh*
The real problem here (besides the obvious ignorance of those involved) is failure to inoculate children against this disease allows it to hang on in small pockets here and there. That means it can, at some future time, spread out to other areas.
The WHO started doing vaccinations against polio around the world in 1988. The number of reported cases worldwide has fallen from 350,000 to 1,968 - a decrease of over 99%.
