The number of spam registerations that the forum has recieved as of late is growing.
We delete, on average, about 5 new accounts every day. This is getting old.
So... I've done something to try and stem the tide.
From what I've read, the spammers scripts look to see what fields are available and then populate them automatically with data. If the fields are missing, they don't fill them.
If you attempt to register a new account, you'll see a note that reads "Do not fill in the following info!" above the section where you can add a home page, AIM, MSN, etc.. If you fill that in, your account gets tossed into the ether. The fields are there, and the message is a 1.7 byte png file (a script won't read the text but a human will).
You can always add the info later on if you have a real account.
This only affects the default theme (damaged... the red and gold and black one).
There is one downside.... I haven't figured out how to not show that when you go to your profile after logging in. Once you're logged in because you created a valid account and want to modify your profile, the same message shows up. Feel free to ignore it (again... this only affects the damaged theme).
Peace, out.
