Thans BF! I will keep a look out and try to take one alive. I have to clean the basement up here soon so I might see another. None of the pics in the doc you posted have the same color as the one's I am trying to discribe. I will look some more tonight online and see if I can find it or at least the color.

After I posted last night I was looking into the Hobo myself. I was born in 1970 so the timing of introduction to the area would be off by almost 10 years. I remember these a child so I am pretty sure they are just house spiders.

We will find out in a few months.

Hey BF! Have been cleaning the basement because of the sewer install in a few weeks. I have found a few smaller dead bodies, but none alive yet(oh darn). They seem to look more like the large one you found but hard to tell as they are long dead. Since we are stiring everything up down there I would think that if I have any live one's left they should be showing themselves shortly.

If and when I find one what should I do with it? I have a small Tupperware type container that I could seal it up in. Should I mail it to you or just let it die and take a Pic? This is of course, "if" I find the one I am looking for.

The cleaning is just darn fun, every 20 mins or so I say to Lady J that there is a spider close to her and she screems. It will never get old. The funniest part is that the first time I really see a live one, she won't belive me.

My suggestion is to catch and freeze to kill. After a day or so (just to be sure) thaw it out and use a couple of toothpicks to spread the legs apart (which will have clenched up when the beastie died). Snap a couple of pics and refreeze the critter. Please post the pics and let me look at them and we will go from there...whether to send them to me or to toss them.

Thanks, Zipper!

Ho Dang!!! We get those spiders in my basement every year. The first time I ever saw one in my basement was like the second year we lived her and it was sprawled out on the wall legs extented. It was probably the size of my palm. I have big hands...Ewwie. Anyways so spiders kinda creep me out. When my aunt moved in she moved in with a nice little pet called Venom, she is a very large Tarantula. Gives me the heebeegeebee's :?

Why would anybody willingly touch a spider that is still alive?

Philosophically, touching a spider doesn't bother me. In practice, it creeps me out. I'm guessing I have some sort of wiring in my instincts that tells me spiders are dangerous, don't touch them.

I gotta say I am in the same boat. I don't get weirded out when I see pictures of them, some of them are just damn cool. When it comes down to touching them? Nope, that's for someone else to do.

Don't know why nature has programmed us to be afraid of a spider (and bugs in general), they aren't dangerous in the way a bear is dangerous...but they are a hell of a lot more common, maybe that's it.

At the last rental we lived in before buying our house, I did a ton of work. I rewired the whole place (replacing 4 fuses with 14 breakers), removed the old nasty plaster & lath and replaced it with sheet rock and real insulation, installed a dishwasher, replaced the water heater, ran ductwork to the top floor (because heat is nice), etc. Yeah... I'm a landlord's wet dream.

Anyway... while running electrical in the crawl space under the house, I noticed there were a lot of friggin spiders. Thousands of dead ones between the joists. It was pretty creepy!

Apparently, one of the little bastards crawled up my leg and bit me on the side of the knee. The skin there necrotized, and I've had to have that area removed (though the skin that now covers that area is doing the same thing).

They're gonna cut it out again.

Am I sexy now?

Its funny the way the body works. I know that a Brown Recluse bite can haunt you for years. Something inspires the body to encapsulate the venom with-in the area of the bite. Years later the "capsule" can break open and the whole spider bite reaction happens all over again.

I had a staff infection in my shoulder years ago, it hasn't worked right since then. Several years ago, I tried to get it to work better, at the end of the physical therapy, they told me the only thing I could do to get the flexiblity back into it was to have surgery. The Dr. REALLY discouraged me from doing it, for the same reason the spider bite comes back. He couldn't say for sure, but said that I had a pretty good chance of having another staff infection if he did the surgery...I elected to live with it.
