Standing around with my damn hand out

Post by bio » Wed Aug 25, 2004 4:37 pm

The server is screwed.

There's a few things that are very, VERY wrong with it and I'm gonna have to replace it with something spiffy... soon!

So, I'm asking people whom I host if they can spare $20.

Here's the machine I'm replacing it with (minus CPU, cooling fan, and video). Cost: 1275.25 + s/h (actually... it's gonna be more, because I just discovered that that motherboard won't handle the SATA card).

If I host you, and you'd like to donate, you can click the paypal link at the bottom of the page (or at wwbd or pixelthugs). Karma will be your best friend! :-)

I will be removing the paypal thing after the new server is orderd (I'm not doing this for profit).

Thanks for not calling me a greedy bastard in advance!

I will donate that $20 as soon as I get paid for my part-time babysitting job. ;)

AMD XP 2000+ (or possibly a pair of MP's)
1 GB Kingston PC-2700
4x 80GB Seagate SATA 7200 RAID-5 (3 + online spare)
3ware PCI to SATA RAID Controller Card
Iomega REV 35GB/90GB ATAPI Internal Drive (for backups)

You may think the processor is light, but I run linux, no GUI (pure command line goodness). This will run like a God.

pick up a pair of raptors for speed.

SATA doesn't provide any extra preformance over IDE as the hard drive cannot utilise the speed offered by IDE let alone SATA.

but, the raptors are faster.

1Q. can you afford opterons? :D or an athlon 64 :|

Speed on the drives is important, but redundancy is critical!

That's why I'm doing the SATA raid array. While it's not as fast as SCSI, it's a hella cheaper solution (and the speed will be more than sufficient).

Oh... and a big w00t!! to mmeowgrl for her donation! I wub her!!
