Tutorial #1 - How to mask

Post by bio » Wed Aug 18, 2004 3:53 pm

For those who don't know how to mask an object, I've created a quick tutorial.

Masking is a quick and easy way to select one item cleanly from an image (or delete a background).

For your reading pleasure: How to mask using Photoshop

I hope this is helpful! (It's a hell of a lot easier than using the magnetic lasso!)

Well, flippy-doo!

That's a method they do not have in Fireworks - gotta lasso an area to mask.

First Illustrator, now Photoshop...tempts a man to...misbehave! :2evil:

My fantasy now is to get Adobe Design Studio w/Acrobat Pro (the Premium edition), the Font Folio (10 user), and the top of the line Wacom tablet (Cintiq 18SX).

And TONS of RAM!

...Time to wake up and go back to work!

Very well done, Bio!

Which reminds me... How did Bill KNOW his wife was:

A. On to him

B. Pissed?

Answer: His cigars started to taste like shit.

ok I tried the masking thing and it worked fine EXCEPT, the remaining image is half see-through (the image itself not the background, the background is completely transparent). I thought it was because I had opacity set at 50% at first, so I did it again at 100% and got the same result.

How come your flower didn't lose any colour depth?

One thing Bio mentioned to me is that when you "color" in the object you need to make sure you go over it well. One thing I did was color it in, switch back to Edit in Standard Mode, and hit delete. Then you can see what parts need to be gone over again. You can then hit Ctrl+Alt+Z to step back through your changes until you are working in Quick Mask Mode again. It's kind of a pain but until one of the gurus posts a solution that should get you through it.

Make sure the opacity and flow on the brush you're using is set to 100%. Also, the type of brush you select can make a difference (make sure you haven't selected the "airbrush" tool_.

This brush gives you even coverage:

This brush is featherd on the edges, so things along the edge will be slightly transparent.

I hope that helps :-)
