Wow, long read, but fun none-the-less.
Its too bad that they didn't go back to the company that issued the check...I think they are the ones that committed a fraud...you can bet they changed their advertising a bit. At least they pby change the check to make it truly non-negotiable.

Yes, i -HAVE- actually done this. It was like 25 years ago or so. The amount of the check was neglible compared to this. The check I cashed was for something like $15 or so. It too was a promotional come-on. The check was only supposed to be good for that amount off the purchase of something in their catalog. Mostly overpriced crappy stuff.
I looked at the check, it looked real. I took it to my bank and asked them. They looked it over and said there was nothing wrong with it. They gave me cash on the spot (out of my account of course, while they waited for it to clear). It never came back as NSF or anything. My statements never showed a debit for the amount. All was good, I'd pulled it off. (oh yea, and it -wasn't- one of those bait-and-switch phone scams either, it was a "check" coupon)
I also never got any more junk mail from that place again. I supposed they -fixed- that problem no too long afterward.
That's why I always check the fine print on all those promotional checks, because some of them -are- good checks, but you end up switching phone companies or something.
It worked once, why not again?
