Ever try to leave AOL?

Apparently... it's not easy.

The AOL billing group is about 3 blocks from my door.

I love the threats that the CS rep levels at the guy, "One day you'll realize I was trying to help you." "Canceling your account is the worst thing you can do!"

Um... I'm pretty sure starting an account with them is the "worst" thing you could do... but hey, that's just me.

Now... if I could just convince my dad to get off of AOL. He knows that he's getting ripped off (it's expensive compared to other services), but it's all he knows.

When he came to my place he had a hard time of it. I had to show him how to launch a web browser and then he just stared at the homepage (google) and said... "where do I put in the keywords?".

Of course, this is the same man who purchased a new computer because the auto-run feature on his media card reader quit working (apparently, browsing it isn't an option).

I figure the CS at AOL think you are stupid. I mean they have a history of you being stupid. They can call up your account and find out how much you have demonstrated your stupidity simply by finding out how long you have been a customer.

Who really cares if AOL abuses their ex-customers. The customers were dumb enough to sign up in the first place.

Now if we could all be ex-Micro$oft customers.

Actually, we should all thank Microsoft.

Prior to them, there were dozens of different OS's, each with it's own command line syntax, structure, and way of doing things.

What Microsoft did was beat out the competition by giving us a GUI interface so that anyone, not just the technocrats, could use a computer.

They created a single easy to use platform that application developers could write to, saving them huge amounts on development costs, and making it so that their product would be available to a huge audience.

Becuase there was this huge audience, things like the internet, broadband, and ecommerce came into being (so did all that free porn you download). Without all those home users and the demand to get online, none of that would exist.

The company has also dumped untold millions of dollars into charity, public schools, and college scholarships (Gates is retiring from the company next year and will devote his focus on those charities).

Sure... it's fun to bash on them... they're the big dog and they don't make perfect software. But if they (or another company) hadn't come along when they did, you probably wouldn't be reading this right now.

I'm still a huge Linux fan (in my opinion it's far better than anything MS has released), but one has to admire what MS did for the world of computing.

I don't sing the gosple of Ascent* nearly as loud as the rest of the chior. They woudn't like me much.

You really should readdress that letter to Xerox Parc.
