Trouble with a fish

So my niece has a new pet, a Beta fish (please no geek humor, it's just what they're called). New is relative, we've had him for a few weeks now. But all the damn thing will eat are frozen bloodworms, it refuses to eat regular Beta food. Not a big problem until it comes to cleaning the bowl. The bloodworms are full of, well, blood. So that of course dirties the water VERY quickly, and the smell is disgusting.
I made the decision tonight after cleaning the bowl with a rag over my nose so I wouldn't gag. Either the little shit eats regular Beta food, or he's out the door... or down the drain. No more. Luckily the kid was there with me while we were cleaning it and she got to smell the results. She didn't seem to broken up about the deal. Our other option is to ship it back to her Mom's house (who bought it in the first place), and she would be able to see it on the weekends when she visits. On a related note, didn't eat much for dinner tonight
