With a good number of deaths now attributed to uproar over the Danish political cartoons, I went on a quest to find them and see what the big deal was.

Uh, Yea... I'm kind of at a loss on this as well... but then again, depending on the issue, I'm a non-believer, or a true believer, so... fuck.

The rest of you all have heads full of mush as far as I'm concerned.

I guess we don't understand because we don't really have any comparable issue in our lives.

The problem doesn't lie with the WAY that Mohamad is portrayed, but that he is portrayed at all. It is part of the Islamic belief that portraying Mohamad is wrong, evil, and against all the rules. They'll take away your 72 virgins for that kind of thing...

We just don't have anything that compares to that, so we end up scratching our heads.

Piss Jesus didn't offend from the depiction of Christ nearly as much as the concept that the National Enowment for the Arts "commissioned" it with a grant...

The interesting part of the story:

This all began because someone was writing a children's book about the Muslim faith. The author wasn't able to find anyone who would do the illustrations because they were afraid of the backlash (he finally did find one, but only if the author promised not to EVER publish his name).

The political cartoonists ran with it, now people are dead, embassies are under attack, and anyone of European descent is in danger (those jahadists don't discriminate).

The day after the first one was published, there was one complaint made to the newspaper. They get daily complaints anyway on a variety of subjects, so one complaint didn't bother them much. It wasn't until many weeks later that it all hit the fan.

Thought to ponder: if we make political cartoons of one group but not another, isn't that a form of discrimination? Shouldn't everyone be treated equally?

Those who are most offended are usually the most guilty.

Nothing should be taken so seriously you need to kill for its honor.

From the Christian POV (setting aside any errors from previous churches), Jesus said he'd forgive anything said wrong about Him - we are not authorized to kill on His behalf. We are right to call for a little respect, but that's it.

But doesn't the Koran also say not to kill in the name of Mohamed? But yet they are, and not just about cartoons.
I agree with RD in that I don't really have anything to compare their anger with. At the same time I can't see killing in the name of a religion. But their culture and lifestyle is so far removed from anything I've experienced I can't say what I'd do in their shoes. For the life of me I can't see condoning their actions.

No, I just think you're trying to line up the reasoning the best that you can, and its difficult to make something coherent out of it. I don't understand why its so difficult for them to simply understand that we're all different; that what we believe others do not. Tolerance is a two-way street.

Live and let live I say...try not to take offense at the ignorant, be respectful of others belief system.

Respect is earned, usually with tolerance. No one is guaranteed the right to not be offended. But a basic component of a civilization is the suppression of violence. Tolerance is a necessary component, not a fall-back provision. Otherwise, there is no civilization.

I'm offended on a regular basis by the assumptions of the socially conservative and the legislating christians. Does that give me the right to fire bomb their offices? Nope. Because even if I don't like them, I still have to tolerate their right to do what they do. Because I live in a civilization.

The Islamic faith, particularly its more militant, pyromaniacal side, is going to have to grow up. Period. No one cares if they believe in Jesus, or that they believe in Mohommad. What people care about is their teenageresque tendancies for temper tantrums when the whole world doesn't regard them with reverence. No one gets reverence in this world and no one should. No one is that above being called into question.

There is difference between slander and humor. The jester has license to make fun of his lord when no one else does. It isn't taken seriously becuase it ISN'T serious. People should just lighten up.
