When I first started the whole hosting thing, it was fun. I did it to save myself money (I was paying another company every month to host me and with all my domains, DSL was actually cheaper).

Of course, it's a lot of work now. Keeping those damn Brazilian smacktards out, dealing with all the problems that come up, etc.

So.... I've decided that I'm not going to host anything from my house any more.

Before you go into full panic mode though.... I have a plan. I'm moving everything over to Dreamhost. The price for 2 years of hosting is $190.80 (I currently play $180 per year just for the static IP's I have). That gives me unlimited domains, 1TB of bandwidth per month (to start), and 20GB of drive space (the entire server only takes up about 8GB).

I'll take most of the domains I host with me and move them to that service. You'll get faster upload/download speeds, access to every feature known to man, and it will be far less susceptible to attack.

I'll also get my bandwidth at home back (you have no idea what the spam email alone does to my DSL).

This isn't going to happen tomorrow or even next month. For those I host, I'll let you know when (so you can update your DNS and MX records).

Edit - I typed in the wrong amount of space they start you with. It's 20GB. I still only use about 8 right now, so that should fit just fine, so long as the smacktards I host don't go friggin' ape-nuts.

When I decided to get another domain, I also decided to get some offsite hosting.

Unfortunately, the best upload bandwidth I can get at present with DSL here is 256k, and on this I host my website, which, as most of you know, is grindingly slow at loading, especially since I have gotten heavily involved in torrenting

So, when I set up grumpyoldwoman.net, I also decided to go with Dreamhost. So far, it has been a pretty cool experience, with one-click install of Wordpress (which, I can tell you, I am loving so far!) and knowing that any unfortunate readers I might have, will get much faster page loads.

I actually went with Dreamhost on your recommendation Bio. When your site was down, you mentioned it, and although they aren't the cheapest, I checked them out (including their blog) and I thought that they were pretty young and pretty cool! So far so good! (and it's nice that they keep all the backend stuff (like sql) updated for you.

They're not the cheapest if you have only one domain, but I can move the 50 some odd I host to them for that same price.

That makes them dirt cheap

I'm going to start with just a couple of sites, see how it looks, and if all is good, I'll move the rest. At least Dreamhost has a 97 day money back guarantee... so if I start the process and find myself unhappy, I can roll back to where I am now and not be out a ton of cash.

I'm actually quite excited about this

As an aside: There are people cheaper who give 1MB/s speed, 1TB xfer, and 20GB HD space for cheaper than $8/mo?

hmmm...I need some help please

I unzipped (the file you pervs), uploaded it to my root directory. created the wordpress database, created a user with all permissions but when I go into PHPmyAdmin, I can't for the life of me find where to set the privileges!!

The wordpress database shows up in the dropdown, along with my photogallery database.

Any ideas?

Well all I can say is to turn off the login required for comments if you're feeling brave.

I dunno about you, but getting feedback (whether good or not) is nice (and comforts me that someone is actually bothering to read my stuff) I would have flicked some in your direction when I visited

I've been lucky so far and haven't received any comment spam as I am using that captcha thingy and have super duper ninja anti-spam protection. (yeah, I know I'm kidding myself and I haven't had any spam cuz noone knows about the new site yet), but, I like to live in the realms of delusion

And yes, I am definitely pro-flower.

I threw my template together quickly by bastardising someone else's, but am definitely not happy with it. I wanted one that wasn't a skinny, leave half the page blank, type (fixed width), although they probably look that way because of the high resolution I operate at and look fine on lower resolutions. But mainly, I didn't think it was all that appropriate to have a pretty floral template on a grumpy page if you know what I mean.

Will have to keep working on it and hope to come up with some inspiration.

I have a bunch of tricks for keeping your blog spam free if anyone is interested.

They do, however, involve editing the wp-comments.php and wp-comments-post.php... so if you're not comfortable with that, then it's pry not for you.

Basically, you make your blog one of a kind when it comes to comments. The spammers use scripts (a lovely little app called Load/Dump is the biggie). Changing little things like field names or adding another field that's required is enough to make them puke all over themselves.

I've moved one domain over there to play with, toneparsons.com. I'll be slowly migrating others over once I figure it all out.
