Open Letter in the LA Times

Post by Encap » Wed Jul 27, 2005 10:13 am

Dear Senator Clinton:

I'm writing to commend you for calling for a $90-million study on the effects of video games on children, and in particular the courageous stand you have taken in recent weeks against the notorious "Grand Theft Auto" series.

I'd like to draw your attention to another game whose nonstop violence and hostility has captured the attention of millions of kids â€â€￾ a game that instills aggressive thoughts in the minds of its players, some of whom have gone on to commit real-world acts of violence and sexual assault after playing.

I'm talking, of course, about high school football.

Jesus, I wish she'd just announce already. Its not like anyone is taking this shit seriously. Stop grandstanding and start campaigning. For crying out loud.

....Because this tactic worked so well when Bob Dole attacked Trent Reznor and Doctor Dre.

...

Wait, what am I doing? I'm a leftie. I must approve of this implicitly.

I was actually thinking more along the lines that it matched what Tipper Gore (Al Gore's wife) did back in the 80's with the mandate to put parental advisory stickers on music.

Oh yeah... the fans still hate her.

Okay, so she knowingly buys her 14 year old grandson a game rated mature for 17 and above, and now that it's rated AO, 18 and older (wow a whole year) she's upset and wants money? WTF!!!

So your 14 year old grandson can play a game that has you pickup hookers, car jack any an everyone, blow stuff up, organize gangs, beat and kill at random, and on and on... but simulated sex scenes between computer characters that are about as bad as most of the nighttime dramas (if you have the right version and the needed mod) puts it over the top.

I could see people getting a refund for the game, but that is about it.

Double post, SWEET!!

So I went back and actually watched the video of this mod in action, so I'd have to amend my previous post a bit. I had only seen the screen shots up 'til now which were nothing big. So they do show the gal naked and such, granted, so a little more than most nighttime dramas. Still I don't think she should get any more than the price of the game. And maybe a talking to about letting her grandson play the game in the first place. Just my opinion.

My feeling isn't that she deserves money. I think it should be thrown out of court. But they're still morons for leaving it in the program. Should have been eradicated before the final compile.

Absolutely. Stupidity on both sides. Anyone writing a game for the PC has got to figure someone is going to find a way to hack it. Little harder for the Xbox and PS2 but I'm sure can still be done. Wonder if there will be any layoffs over at Rockstar? :)
