Central air good... furnace bad!

Baldy and I spent a good portion of yesterday ripping my furnace apart for the impending installation of my central air conditioning unit.
My question is: who the hell installed this thing?!?
It was placed in a corner so that you couldn’t access two sides of it very well, and they had placed screws in the cowling that attaches to the plenum. Add to the mix the fact that the top also was built directly under the joist (leaving no room to lift it off over the raised portion on top). After much work (and tying tools to our wrists in case we dropped them behind the damn thing, never to be seen again), we finally got the things torn apart.
Now I need to rebuild the pillar below to shorten it, cut a hole in the side for the air feed (it currently feeds from the bottom), place in the AC radiator (which is too tall to go in there at the moment), and rebuild the top. That doesn’t sound too bad until you recognize the truth: I have no fucking idea what I’m doing.
I foresee a very expensive bill from the heater repairman in my future.
