I was a 49292 . Ground Radio Operator. That is to distinguish between airborne and ground operations. I started with ditty bop (Morse Code) and by the time I retired, I was a AFSATCOM (AF Satelite Comm) operator.

Started out as 304X4, Ground Radio Communications, and the number was later changed to 2E1X1 (If I remember right). HF, UHF, VHF, and some limited SHF stuff, ground only, no aircraft. Our mission was to provide initial base communications to a bare bones installation. First ones in (supposedly -behind- the Marines), and last ones out (supposedly -before- the Marines).
Things have changed a lot since then. Different equipment, different missions, etc.

My AFSC was 1W051A
Weather Ops - I was a forecaster stationed at Laughlin AFB, TX and Fairchild AFB, WA.
Basically I provided forecasts and briefings for pilots and approved or denied takeoffs.
