Here's an idea:
DON'T PUT SO MANY PEOPLE ON THE FUCKING PLANE!!
*whew* sorry, had to get that out.
The airlines just piss me off. They make the seats as small as possible to get in as many people as they can to make more money. Then overweight people are charged EXTRA cause the seats are too small. Now they are being blamed for extra fuel?? So what, are they going to charge them extra for the seat and the fuel??
If they would take a few seats out and make the existing ones bigger that would lighten up the plane, use less fuel, make passengers more comfortable, less irritated it and it would probably be better for all.

Which brings me to a nagging question. . .
Why are people flyings -so- much? I mean really! It seems our air transportation system is bursting at the seams. Thousands upon thousands travelling by air every day. Where? Why? To what end?
I seem to remember a day when most people travelled for vacation purposes, to go back home and visit relatives, etc. Now it seems that business people have to fly everywhere. Their office is the chair on an airplane.
Why?

Yeah, it worries me that so many are overweight but it worries me more when a corporation comes along and blames problems of poor management and greed on overweight people. The arrogance of these bastards is shameful. In the meantime, overcrowded planes force people to stay seated in a forced, uncomfortable position, where after enough time they begin to form blood clots. And lest they want to say the overweight nature of Americans is what causes the overcrowded planes, I saw a 12 year old sitting on the aisle have to swivel her scrawny legs out, so that her 8 year old little sister could get out and into the aisle.
Corporations making excuses is the single most pathetic thing I can think of.

Well for me, it's because my girlfriend lives 11 hours away. One of us is flying once a month. 11 hour drive vs. three hours, bus and flight combined. Which would you choose?AsaJay wrote:I seem to remember a day when most people travelled for vacation purposes, to go back home and visit relatives, etc. Now it seems that business people have to fly everywhere. But I see the point about all the travel. My girlfriend and I do a lot of videoconferening. Obviously us being in the same room has benefits over communicating by screen, but I don't understand why business people can't start doing more video conferencing especially since it is so cheap and easy now. Of course, if this were to happen, it would break up a lot of extramarital affairs and the business world would lose a lot of deductable lunches, but it seems for all its greed, corporate America would be all over it.

so you don't want the airlines to make money Eddie? More people in the plane makes for lower fares (in theory). I can't blame them for trying to cram as much money onto the plane as possible. They are a for profit business, and they should run it that way.
That being said, I have spent a LOT of time on planes...currently I am Gold on Northworst Airlines, and prior to that I was a 1K flyer on United...I still have a significant balance in both frequent flyer acounts. I do agree with you that the damn planes are packed to the gills with people and that makes for a very uncomfortable flight for guys like me. At 6'5" and 220lbs, there isn't a seat in the plane that I fit in comfortably, not even the first class ones...I *wish* that they would change that, but I recognize that they never will AND keep the fares where you and I can afford to go on vacation now and then.
Its the same arguement that I have used on a guy that wanted a Ford Escort that would last a million miles...Ford CAN do it...but not for the $9995 (at that time) that the current Escort cost.
So why are the planes so packed and uncomfortable? The short answer is that the public demands that it is that way.

Survey statistics show:
• Women, ages 20-74, weighed an average of 164.3 pounds in 2002, up from 140.2 in 1960.
• Men the same age weighed an average of 191 pounds in 2002, up from 166.3 in 1960.
• Kids, ages 6 to 11, weighed about 74 pounds in 2002, up from 65 pounds in 1963.
• Boys, ages 12 to 17, weighed an average of 141 pounds in 2002, up from 125 in 1966.
• Girls the same age weighed 130 pounds, up from 118 in 1966.
Why are we so damn fat? There are the two obvious reasons: diet and excercise.
We eat crap. Lots and lots of crap. Then, we go home and sit our asses down in front of a TV.
Get off your ass, put down the remote control, and eat sensable (quit chugging gravy straight from the ladle!)

Hey! mY fiNgErs get PlenTy of eXerCise.
But I agree.
- a plethora of fast food establishments (I remember when it was pretty much only McDonanlds and A&W)
- computers, TV, gaming systems.
- power wheels (watched Americas funniest videos a couple weeks back, toddler, maybe 16 months old, uncontrolled, driving a power wheel type car under a truck, pinning the poor kid underneath, foot firmly planted on the gas pedal, just getting worse. Now why the hell was -that- supposed to be funny?)
I'm lazy too, I'm guilty, I need more exercise and less sugar.
Though I -am- still less hefty than RD.

I have no problem with them wanting to make money. The problem is, that's seems to be all they care about. They'd rather make money than improve flight service. They are still providing a service, and as such they should be held to a certain level of service.
Would you accept going to a resturaunt and having to wait an hour to see a waitress because there are too many people for her to wait on? The owner is making more money cause more people are there (in theory) and he's paying less in wages. I'm guessing most people would walk out.
Harder to do with airlines as they all pretty much suck in their own way and there is no other option for faster travel. So you are kind of stuck with what there is. So because there is that need (in some cases perceived) to get there fast people will continue accepting the airline industry as is. But then if people decided to be more picky in deciding whether they really needed to fly as opposed to drive or train, then the airlines would hike the price of tickets to compensate for it. It's just a really big messed up situation.
Personally, I'm waiting for transporters to make it big.

And maybe it would do the airline industry some good if they started serving diet-friendly snacks and meals. You know how many times I've found out that by the time the cart got to me they had run out of Diet Coke. EVERY DAMN TIME I FLY. Not to mention, I'm on Adkins (Hey it worked). There's nothing on a flight that is the least bit Adkins friendly.

You've got a good point Eddie, and I agree with it.
I also realize that it won't change anytime soon. As long as people keep demanding lower fares, the service will continue to decline.
If you could go to Spago (fancy resurant in NY?) and only pay $10 for your meal, but had to wait an hour for the waitress to arrive with your order would you do it?
Basically, until we refuse to fly, it won't change. Since I don't see that happening, it will continue to be this way. They are even taking away more service...you now have to BUY your meal on a flight less than 5 hours on Northworst...its $10 for a TGIFriday's meal (from last week) now...
Its all because we continue to use the service, and damand they lower the cost of flying...all the while their costs go up. Its real that people like me cause the airline to use more fuel to get to where they want to go. They didn't change that, I did.

Right, understood. My musing was rather, why is it being done "so much"?mmeowgrl wrote:For some of us flying is the only viable travel option
Case in point. Miftah, how in the world did you end up with a gf 11 hours away? I'm not trying to make fun, or bad mouth the relationship. I'm pointing out that somewhere along the line, we've opened up the world our personal and business lives are a part of.
Long ago, it was more common to marry a high school sweetheart. Nowdays, it's -not- uncommon to find relationships far away. If you can make it work, more power to you.
. . . and in business, I find it odd that many people believe they -have- to travel so much. What did we do 50 years ago?
tangent. . . How in the world, did we -ever- do business -without- cell phones, 40 years ago? It's just not as critical as too many people would like to believe it is.
At least, it -isn't- to -me-.
