*Yawn* microsoft releases another update...

I sat next to a guy from microsoft (yes he was a zealot). He said that SP2 tends to break a large number of computers it is installed on...

On of the things he mentioned to me is that it WILL change your security settings. Turns on the XP firewall be default (this will pretty much break my internal network) among other things.

I think I'll wait on this one...

Install at your own risk!

BTW, EVERY copy of windows XP is cracked (as in broken).

Broadband is nice, is all I gotta say!

Dunno if I'll try it out, but I'll keep it available.

We recieved a corperate email the other day telling us to NOT install this little peach from Microsquishy.

It breaks touchpoint and several other applications that we use here.

I'm gonna install it on my youngest sons pc first (since I have to install a new motherboard and reinstall anyway). If it doesn't totally trash his sytem, I'll look at putting it on the rest of my computers at home.

works good for me.

apparently they think they spent $1,000,000,000 on it. wondering what that includes? $999 million for balmer & Co $1mill for the rest?

not impressed nothing but a few tweaks. everything works for me but it doesn't recognise "BitDefender" as anti-virus. IMO the best anti virus out there. bit defender works fine, but it doesn't show in security center.

oh an for dummies... i now get an annoying ballon telling me to instal anti-virus. WOW!

Holy s*&t that's a lot of programs. Funny thing is that pretty much the entire office suite, as well a ton of other microsoft programs are affected. Looks like they should spend 2B on the next release.

Before you install XP sp2 on your machine... make sure you check this list of programs that are known to have issues with it.

Hmmm... Nero, UT, Starcraft, most Command and Conquer games.

I think this will definately fall under the "I'll update it when I have to" catagory.

Surely if it breaks that many programs (including their own) they would have to withdraw it and start again? Or, are they just gonna leave it out there and expect ALL of those manufacturers to fix theirs?

I was just about to install XP (still using win2k) but kind of like the idea of being fully patched!

Truse me, Eve... XP is pry the best thing that Micro$oft ever released. It's very much worth upgrading from Win2k (XP is really just Win2K with a candy coated shell and some very nice extras).

If you do upgrade, make sure you do the whole windows update gig before doing much anything else. I'd just avoid SP2 for now.

I did the SP2 upgrade on both my boxes - bit of a slowdown on my p4 1.7 ghz laptop, but that pup was flagging before the SP2 install. Natch, you get nagged if any of your apps try to access the internet, but that is easily attended to.

For best results, do as Bio says - install xp, then the patches, then your apps...excluding the no-no list.

so if you install the apps after the patch then they will be okay?

Hard to say, since I did not install that way. Generally, there is a lower chance of a hose up this way, based on previous installs with other OS'es - maybe I will flush my laptop and test this soon.

recently noticed a problem with photoshop CS.

the pack seems to limit the number of windows/connections you can have at one time.

photoshop crashed or wouldn't allow me to do certain things unless i closed X amount of internet explorer windows.

overall after 13 days straight of running my computer with it is NOT to install. infact don't even bother with updates! impossible to stay bug free and secure with windows.

just back up you shit and use some sort of restore program such as norton ghost.
