My internet makes me grumpy
My internet is acting up a bit and I'm having a hell of a time troubleshooting it.
When the Xfinity guy came today, it shows I'm pulling 600+mbps down and ~18mbps up with his equipment. When I plug in my equipment using the same CAT5e cables I show I'm pulling around 100mbps. I get the same result on multiple devices, but because his device shows everything is shiny, it's case closed.
Ugh....
I can't help but think he gave me the "I've been here an hour and can't figure it out" answer.

Did they check the equipment at the box outside your house? Could be the coax cable between his splitter and your modem

Nope, they checked it inside the house. We even pulled the wire out of the back of my PC and he would test on it, then plug it back in and I'd test on it.... two completely different results. Normally I'd say that there was a problem with my eth0, but we got the exact same result my PC had when testing that wire on another PC (the benefit of having multiple PC's in the room)
I think his equipment either measures the result differently or is a bullshit machine.
Regardless... I"m still pulling about the same rate no matter what server I hit.
I'll call back in and see if they'll let me swap out the modem.

You need to wire your rooms with cat6 and put it to a patch panel. Switch it to your gateway. Preferably somewhere in a cool room near the cable box.
Anyways that's what I'm going to do. I already have a full networking Unifi system. I just need to get a dedicated server for the gateway controller

If you are using the cable companies cable modem, you should get your own.

Re: My internet makes me grumpy
My house is already wired with CAT5e and each zone has an unmanaged gigabit router. Mind you, this all worked flawlessly until reciently... so something changed somewhere, and since I get the same results no mater what machine or cable I use, the modem is the only thing that's common.zzottt wrote: ↑Wed Aug 12, 2020 5:43 pm You need to wire your rooms with cat6 and put it to a patch panel. I have one (from before), but I also I have a home security system through Xfinity. It requires their stupid modem to work, so that's not something I'm able to do.
With that said, their security system works pretty well. Very fast response if it goes off (when I screw up and open a door or window without thinking)... they call in under 60 seconds to see if it's me (verified by a specific response I created). I have no idea how much it costs me a month for that bit, but I pay just over $200 a month for the HD digital preferred TV package, home security, and Max Blast internet. I'd love to drop the cable bit as I only watch 4 of the 1,000ish channels, but my wife disagrees with my view on that.
