OP/ED: I'm sick of 9/11

When did the media appoint itself the Government Department of Grieving? Observing the annivarsary as a time to remember the event is so artificial. I imagine that if you were directly affected by the event, you damn well don't need an anniversary date to grieve for it.

Surely the hype is a product of the Bush Administration wanting you to remember the fear right before the midterm elections. Its a shame the numbers are coming back so bad for them, even on the subject of 9/11.

I would agree that its important to remember what happened, but I'm not sure its being put in the right context. Sure, lets talk about preparedness. Lets talk about our CIA and Executive branch screwing the pooch on defending us against it.

But it still surpises me that no one asks why they did it past Bush proclaiming that they hate freedom. If you hear what they say in their messgaes, what they're saying is that they want freedom from us. That by supporting Israel, we are siding against the arab community and silently endorsing the subjegation of Islamic people in favor of Jews.

I'm not saying this justifies what they did in the least, but you have to wonder why it is that Bush never acknowledges that they say this. Why it gets simplified down to "they hate freedom." They don't want to enslave us. They don't want us to convert to Islam. They want our fingers out of the Middle East. That's certainly different scenario than Bush depicts; with Al Quaida sitting around bitching about us being free over their morning coffee break, when one of them pipes up that they oughta do something about them rascally Americans.

What I'm driving at is this: five years later, we can't even look at what happened and what drove those men to kill so many honestly. Unless we can start being honest about it, there's absolutely no reason to trot out the old horror for everyone to remember. Its a waste of time at best, and manipulation at worst.

That seems pretty contrary to honoring the dead to me.

Of course, if the current administration looked at and recognized the "why" aspect, then they might have to take corrective measures that don't put billions of dollars into defense contracts (and therefore into the pockets of those who got them into power).

Yeah, the worlds a fucked up place. Our goverment is blind to the truth, people are dying, and hollywood is making money with movies about 9/11.

I'm not saying that the actions that took place on that fateful day are right, or that those who took them had the right to do so, but perhaps if we focused on what the real problems are and took steps to corret them, something like this woudn't be so likely to come upon us again.

Agreed, not only do I feel like the media and this administration are just continuing to use the events to their own ends I'm just so damn sick of hearing about it. What do we not already know? I'm tired of all the stupid dramas on TV and all the rehashing. I want to MOVE ON. It will never be forgotten but I don't need to be REMINDED.

what's even more pathetic than the media and administration rehashing the past to death (no pun intended) is the people that have obsolutely no connection to anyone involved but still have their butts glued to their couches watching every special non-stop. It's those kind of people that vote based on who has the best campaign adds and not who will do the best job.

So I saw the Presidents cash-in on the coverage tonight. I wondered if he would regard Iraq choosing a government of fundamentalist Islams a democratically-elected government. Interesting that on a day meant for mourning the dead, he chose to further defend his invasion of Iraq. Except by interesting, I mean "nauseating." And by defend, I mean "lamely attempt to justify."

I think that sums it up. Without fear, and constantly reminding the drooling herds of "I'm not going to educate myself on the issues themselves" voters, this administration doesn't have much substantive policy to stand on. Finger pointing and flag draping keeps their Hummer motors running.

Does this mean I'm not as patriotic as the next guy? Of course not, and I wouldn't even feel like I need to defend myself if the mere act of questioning Bush wasn't labeled so unpatriotic by his spinners.
