Having read up on the subject a bit, the harshest critics of MS are saying that Vista exists almost exclusively to patch the gaping digital rights hole that exists currently, within Windows. From DVD to MP3 to whathaveyou. The lack of robust new features is a direct result of MS's single-minded pursuit of DRM being an integral part of the OS. Ditto security, though that is getting a bit more attention since security holes are the only reason why anyone would upgrade to a browner, shinier, stinkier turd.
As ever, hackers, whose real nature in the scheme of things is getting clearer every day, will doubtlessly provide us options. But as official software sources go, the nature of your relationsip with your computer is about to change. And as information as commerce goes, they're looking to
raise the rent.
BTW, if you Google on this subject, it practically shits itself to give you background. I provided only a single link that seemed to sum it up best. There are dozens of other sites. Some more alarmist than this one, some less. Choose your flavor, but take a peek into the future. It ain't pretty.
