Server Outage (again.... damn it!)

Post by bio » Tue Jan 18, 2005 2:50 pm

There was an outage on connectivity to the server today (the server itself was working just fine).

When you attempted to ping, it gave you a TTL Timeout on some IP in my ISP's NOC. A tracerout returned the following loop:

23 71 ms 72 ms 72 ms cr1.cet.com [206.63.80.1]
24 70 ms 70 ms 73 ms c7206.cet.com [206.63.80.10]
25 72 ms 72 ms 73 ms cr1.cet.com [206.63.80.1]
26 73 ms 72 ms 72 ms c7206.cet.com [206.63.80.10]
27 70 ms 72 ms 72 ms cr1.cet.com [206.63.80.1]
28 72 ms 75 ms 75 ms c7206.cet.com [206.63.80.10]
29 72 ms 73 ms 73 ms cr1.cet.com [206.63.80.1]
30 73 ms 72 ms 72 ms c7206.cet.com [206.63.80.10]

So... I called them. The explination: it's my router at home ("It must have lost it's configuration, can you go home and check it?"). Um... *cough* bullshit *cough*. "If it's my router... why is it getting lost in your system, bouncing on an endless loop between two of your routers?" I asked.

Not much of a reply to that.

Anyway... I drove home, found my router in a locked state (which is what happens when they reset my connection from their end), cycled it, and away it goes.

Theory: they found whatever change they applied to thier routers this morning, corrected it, then sent a command to reset my connection (which I have disabled on my router so that I can tell when they've done it).

99% my ISP is up and running and kicks much ass... but when there's an issue, I often get the run-around... and that drives me nuts. Not nuts enough to leave them, but nuts just the same.

Retraction time!!

The network engineer guy from my ISP just called my desk at work. I had sent an email to them with an analysis from our network engineer on where the break was in connectivity.

He spoke with me for about 20 minutes, explaining exactly how the connection is made between my house and their network. Apparently, when you attempt to connect to my server, the packets are routed to first one router to see if I'm there, then the other. If I'm not on one, I must be on the other (and therefore it loops between the two).

The problem is my crap Actiontech router that was supplied by Qwest. They have a tendancy to blow up from time to time. He suggests a Cisco 678, as they have excelent uptime.

The cisco will also reduce ping latency by about 30ms (*drool*). This would kick much ass... as I enjoy a game or two.

Therefore, my ISP is once again in my good graces, my bad, and God bless teh intraweb!!!
